Background of the Study
Eating disorders and body image concerns have emerged as serious mental health issues among adolescents, particularly among teenage girls. In Kwara State, societal pressures, cultural norms, and media influence contribute to the development of unhealthy body image perceptions and disordered eating behaviors. Teenage girls are increasingly exposed to idealized images and messages about beauty, which can lead to low self-esteem, dieting, and extreme measures to achieve perceived physical perfection (Chinwe, 2023; Olayinka, 2024). These disorders, which include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder, are associated with severe physical and psychological consequences. The combination of peer pressure, social media exposure, and cultural expectations can create a challenging environment for adolescent girls, where the desire for acceptance and validation may override healthy eating habits. Despite growing awareness, there is limited localized research on the prevalence of eating disorders and body image concerns among teenage girls in Kwara State. This study aims to examine the extent of these issues and their impact on mental health, providing insights that could inform the development of targeted intervention and prevention programs.
Statement of the Problem
In Kwara State, the prevalence of eating disorders and negative body image among teenage girls is a growing concern. Many young girls struggle with societal and media-driven pressures to conform to unrealistic body standards, leading to unhealthy behaviors such as restrictive dieting, binge eating, and purging (Okafor, 2023). The resulting psychological distress often manifests as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Despite the serious consequences of these conditions, there is a lack of comprehensive data on their prevalence and impact within this population. Additionally, limited access to mental health resources and inadequate school-based support systems exacerbate the problem. The stigma surrounding eating disorders further prevents many affected individuals from seeking help. Without targeted intervention strategies, the long-term mental and physical health of teenage girls in Kwara State is at risk. This study seeks to investigate the extent of eating disorders and body image concerns, identify underlying factors, and propose effective intervention measures.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of eating disorders and body image concerns among teenage girls in Kwara State.
2. To identify the cultural, social, and media influences that contribute to these issues.
3. To recommend targeted interventions to improve body image and reduce disordered eating behaviors.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of eating disorders among teenage girls in Kwara State?
2. Which factors most strongly influence body image concerns in this population?
3. What interventions can effectively promote healthy eating behaviors and positive body image?
Research Hypotheses
1. High exposure to idealized media images is significantly associated with increased eating disorders.
2. Peer pressure and cultural expectations are major predictors of negative body image among teenage girls.
3. School-based and community interventions will significantly reduce the prevalence of eating disorders.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on teenage girls (aged 13-19) in selected schools and communities in Kwara State. Data will be collected via surveys, focus groups, and clinical assessments. Limitations include potential self-report bias and sensitivity in discussing eating behaviors and body image.
